I’ve been MIA while attempting to rewrite book one of the Pickles and Piper series. Absolutely nothing was working, so I decided to do the next best thing – a complete reboot! Everything is changing! I’m rewriting backgrounds, characters, and simplifying the whole thing.
Where I went wrong with book one was too many characters for a short book. That killed me. I also had too many subplots. The reboot only has 4 characters, and the traveling shovel of death. At this point, Piper and her mom are merely mentioned and are no longer key players.
It’s making life so much easier, as is changing the location. Springhollow is out the window. I’m focusing on Titchfield, where Pickles lives. Book 1 now takes place in her own neighbourhood. There’s lots of other changes, as well. If you read clips from the original story on this blog, the differences will make your eyes cross. 🙂
I’m also using Trello to plot and loving it. I have everything I need on one screen: All three acts, characters images, location images, ideas, writing tips, and a To-Do list.
Anyway! Tomorrow is Camp Nano 2020! And I have a lot more planning to do before it begins.
Hope everyone is making the most of lockdown! 🙂
“Thanks for talking Mom and Dad into letting me come along, Joe,” said Stanley.
“Anytime! I hate driving alone.”
“Thanks a lot,” grumbled Turd. “What am I chopped beef?”
“No, you’re the guy who keeps sticking his hand through the windshield and raising the wipers!”
They pushed on both sides of the wall. Several minutes later, Stanley hand went forward. The panel slid back and revealed a small open space, like a box. Stanley screamed like a little girl. Pickles threw her hand over his mouth and threatened to kill him if he didn’t shut up. Piper shined her headlamp inside. A tiny spiders eyes were looking back at her.
“NOOOO!!! GO BACK!!! GO BACK!!!” screamed Turd.
Stanley didn’t hesitate. He raced back down and collided into Stu.
“You yelled Turd.”
“Yeah, he’s with us. He went up to see his old room, but your Grandmother just threw him out.”
“Wait! That jerk is in the manor right now?”
“JERK?” yelled Turd. He yanked Stu’s pants down as he ran past with Elena hot on his tail.
Stu looked down at his pants, now lying at his ankles. “Yup! He’s here.”
Just as Stanley started to fall asleep, he jumped out of bed and raced over to Joe’s.
“No. I sense something – a presence I haven’t felt since…” Out of nowhere, a pillow hit Stanley so hard in the head that he hit the floor. “TURD!” he cried.
“That wasn’t me,” screamed Turd. “RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! THE MONSTER FROM THE BLACK LAGOON IS BACK!”
Suddenly, books, pillows, pens, paper, were flying everywhere. Joe and Stanley were ducking and trying desperately to get to the stairs and escape.
