The Turd is Banned! (Diary entry by Piper)
Dear Diary,
This morning, Turd threw a cup of cold water on Mom while she was in the shower. He swore his eyes were closed. Mom was furious! I’ve never seen her so mad! He’s permanently banned from the house.
This is the best thing that’s happened since Turd moved back with us. No more waking up to cornflakes in my bed! No more having my homework deleted. Life can finally get back to normal.
When Bad Things Happen With a Published Book
Oh, yeah. It’s been one of those weeks. I finally got “The Ghosts of Springhollow” published on Kindle, only to find out, while working on the paperback edition, that there were a ton of errors! I freaked! This was a disaster! My reputation was about to burn. It’s over. The meanest reviews on the planet are coming my way!
I quickly removed the book from Amazon and set to work correcting every mistake “SAS Writing Reviser,” and “Grammarly” could find. At the time of this writing, the Kindle book ($1.99) is back in “publishing” mode, and the paperback edition ($5.99) is in “review.”
This experience made me happy that buyers can download the new edition to replace the icky one for free. I love you Kindle!
Thankfully, I didn’t have the paperback version up yet. 🙂
TV, Books, Kids and How What We Say Tells People About Us.
When I began the Pickles and Piper Mysteries I wanted them to quote from their favourite books and shows because that’s what my friends and I have always done. Well, except for one friend who has a habit of looking at you and saying, “I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name.” And that was before the brain trauma. 🙂
Anyway, so Pickles and Piper use lines from The Hobbit, Sherlock Holmes, The Big Bang Theory (who doesn’t love Sheldon), and Ghost Busters. If you say something near them, and they like it – they’ll start quoting you too.
A cool thing about the quotes is that whether it’s a character in a book, or a real person, we get to know more about them by the words they use. For example,
A cook will use cooking terms, like: “Now you’re cooking!” or “Your goose is cooked!”
A carpenter might say, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, a bad carpenter always blames his tools.” or “You hit the nail on the head.”
When we hear any of these expressions, we know the person either enjoys cooking or carpentry, or they hang out with people who do. Or they watch a lot of cooking and DIY shows! Either way, it gives us a look into their private life without them even knowing.
In the sequel to “The Ghosts of Springhollow,” you’ll see the expression, “Roll a D6.” It’s a gamer’s term for roll a 6 sided dice to see whether you can do something or not.
What are some expression you use a lot that have to do with your hobbies or career?
Check out the book while it’s still 99 cents!
