Being a full-time vandweller, I’m always looking for the easiest way to do things. It doesn’t matter if it’s setting up, or breaking camp. Cooking, or trying to keep the van warm or cold. I’m constantly on the lookout for a better way.
The same goes for writing. I’m always looking for an easier way to organise, create characters and plot lines. So, I read books and watch writing videos on YouTube and Amazon.
Two books by James Scott Bell have really helped me with the second book in the Pickles and Piper series. They are: “Write Your Novel From the Middle,” and “How to Write Pulp Fiction.” The first book gave me a good template to work with, and the second gave me a plot generator! The template and generator have made life so much nicer.
How? Well, think about the last time you made a resume. I bet you went on Word and found a template to use. Why? Because templates make the process go faster! They do the same for writing books!
A video that also helped me a lot is Rob Parnell’s, “The Easy Way to Write Short Stories That Sell.” His 5 Pt plot line is fantastic, and you can expand it for any length of book or story you write.
Anyway, I thought I’d share the template with you so you can see how I’ve combined Parnell and Scott’s methods. Click here to see the whole thing and read the bits and bobs.
Friday, I’ll share more tricks I use when writing stories that make life easier!
Working hard this morning on book 2 in the Pickles and Piper series. This one is going to be so much fun! This morning, while I was out on a walk, I came up with a new character that’s going to add a whole new dimension to the story for Turd.
I also did a cool change up in the story by pulling my favourite character, Rabbi Titchy, in. He’s just too cool to leave out.
If you’re a gamer, you’ll notice the “CSP” buttons at the bottom of the screenshot. Yup. Chaotic Shiny! If you’ve never used her software before, check it out at Chaotic Shiny to try it out, or go to RPGNow .
I love using it ideas, character creation, generating names, you name it! She’s got it all over there! And, you don’t have to be a gamer to enjoy the site. It’s a gold mine for writers!
Meanwhile, Scrivener is open! Off to my adventure! 🙂
While finishing up “The Ghosts of Springhollow,” and working on my outline of the sequel, “Revenge of The Turd,” I realised I’m in need of three extra kids in the story – 2 jerks, and 1 nice kid.
So, I came up with a fun idea! For 1 cuppa coffee, you can have your child in “Revenge of The Turd.” (coming out in September) Just let me know if they want to be a jerk or nice. 🙂 They’ll also have a special mention at the back of the book for participating. I only need 3 kids, so it’s first come, first serve. 🙂 One cup per kid.
Looking forward to seeing who my 3 new characters are! Make sure you check the number of cups served. When you see 4, the entries are filled.
Click the link here or in the sidebar to participate! 🙂
I’m down to the last two chapters to revise, and then I’m sending off to my nephew so he can read it to his family. If my great-niece gives the thumbs up – it’s a go. Yeah, always trust kids with your story – especially really blunt kids. 🙂
I still have a good deal of editing to do. The grammar went wonky as I went along. So, once I get the thumbs up, it’s off to the thing I hate most in life – grammar. lol
(brief excerpt from my upcoming book, “The Ghosts of Springhollow.”)
“HE SHOT ME AGAIN! RIGHT IN THE CHEST!” screamed Turd pointing to where the bullet passed through him.
“Turd! You’re already dead!” yelled Piper.
“OH SURE, SHOOT THE DEAD GUY! I LOVE YOU TOO, PIPER!”
